The Original London cast recording of Broadway-bound musical Sister Act will get a digital release in the U.S. on March 22 and a brick-and-mortar release on March 29, courtesy of Ghostlight Records. Patina Miller, who will reprise her Olivier Award-nominated leading role on Broadway, led the cast as disco diva Deloris Van Cartier. The album was produced by Doug Besterman, Michael Kosarin and show composer Alan Menken.
Based on the hit 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act features music by Oscar-winner Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, with Douglas Carter Beane joining the book-writing team for Broadway. The story follows the fabulous Van Cartier, who witnesses a murder and is put into protective custody in a convent. Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her fabulous disco-ness and killer voice to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon it’s nun-on-the-run time, but she finds salvation in the heavenly power of her newly found sisterhood.
The cast album features songs including “Take Me to Heaven,” “Fabulous, Baby!” “Raise Your Voice” and “Sunday Morning Fever.” Sister Act originally opened at the London Palladium in June 2009 starring Miller, Sheila Hancock, Ian Lavender, Chris Jarman, Ako Mitchell, Katie Rowley Jones, Claire Greenway and Julia Sutton. In addition to Miller, the Broadway company of Sister Act features Tony Award-winner Victoria Clark as Mother Superior. The New York production begins performances on March 24 at the Broadway Theatre and officially opens April 20, directed by Jerry Zaks.
